Millions of users leave their computers on at all times. This idle time could be used to help the Human Proteome
Folding Project, which will bring many insights into cancer research.
The Proteome is to proteins what the Genome is to genes. Essentially it is the sum of all proteins in our body. We know
the sequence of amino acids in proteins, but the way the fold after they are produced can lead to major discoveries,
and it is a very computer-intense operation.
The project is powered by grid.org, which uses millions of computers worldwide to
create the largest medical distributed computing effort in history. Former distributed computing project topics include
anthrax,
smallpox and
cancer.
You can read more about this effort by visiting grid.org.
