When you first get the news you have cancer it can be hard to know what to think or feel, let alone do. Eventually you may find that you’re getting more advice than you know what to do with, but the initial diagnosis can be difficult, overwhelming, and confusing. When I was diagnosed I had no idea what questions to ask besides the obvious one, “How can we make it go away, and how soon can it be done?” I remember not asking anything else, just dutifully wriing down the word “chemo” in my day planner next to my social engagements and school obligations. In retrospect there were important questions I could have asked early on that could have really helped clarify things. I came upon this helpful list, originally published in the Wall Street Journal, which details five key questions to ask when you are diagnosed with any kind of cancer. It seems to me the more information you can get right away, the better and less confused you’ll feel as you begin your treatment.

(Page 1)2. Thanks for the feedback, Laura. I also had an issue with incorrect staging and can relate to the kind of impact that can have on your treatment protocol.

1. Thanks for the article, Michelle. I didn't know to ask about molecular markers. Also, I can relate to the proper staging question. One of the biggest "mess ups" early on when I was diagnosed was the incorrect course of chemo for the stage I was actually at. This had pretty unfortunate results later on when I relapsed. Great information.
