Smoking
is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Smoking increases the risk of heart attack and stroke,
respiratory problems, lung and other types of cancer. Despite the fact that these deaths are 100 percent preventable,
researchers are predicting that the global annual deaths from smoking will double to 10 million by 2020. An
increase in smoking deaths is troubling enough, however that does not include deaths related to second hand smoke
inhalation and the rising trend of smoking among young females. In an international survey of young females, ages
13-15, nine percent of young girls admitted to habitually using tobacco products. Dr Charles Warren, of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, is calling for an increased effort to implement non smoking
programs geared towards young adult, especially females. "The high use of tobacco among young girls is the worst
news we could have," said Warren. "It is an indication that big change is occurring, which is very different
from what we see from adult females."Note: The contents of this blog are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as medical advice or substitute for professional care. For medical emergencies, dial 911!
