Abortion: scarlett letter for breast cancer

I have kept this post in the pending file for two days because something inside me is deeply opposed to giving these groups any more media attention or blog time than they manage to attract on their own. But, as a breast cancer survivor, I have become aware of an emerging new twist in the agenda regarding the fight to overturn the legalization of abortion that is so disturbing and offensive, I feel compelled to share the observation more than I feel compelled to denying these groups attention. This post is not about abortion. This post is about a group using cancer in a veiled attempt to further the political agenda for overturning the legalization of abortion -- in what appears to be an anything goes tactic of justifying the means to achieve the ultimate goal.

So, here we go. The Christian Communication Network newswire released a Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer press release challenging Glamour magazine to a debate over the abortion link to cancer. It seems Glamour magazine has published two stories citing scientific research indicating no link between abortion and breast cancer.

In the religious pro-life fight to get the legalization of abortion overturned, it has resorted to the scurrilous tactics of fear and shame in suggesting that if you have an abortion, or you had an abortion, your risk of breast cancer rises dramatically. They have studies they refer to in supporting their position. But outside of Christian intent of winning the minds and hearts of a nation in the political aims of ultimately influencing federal law with Christian religion belief, the secular scientific community concludes, with many independent studies, that there is no conclusive link. The medical community suggests any research indicating a breast cancer risk to abortion is too weak to legislate a mandatory breast cancer risk warning to women considering an abortion.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there is no evidence of a direct relationship between breast cancer and abortion. Again, this post is not a debate about abortion, this post is an objection to using cancer to further an agenda, and the organizations willing to go to any lengths to achieve its goals.
