Cancer research runs in the Rauscher family

His father was a cancer researcher in the 70s who was designated as the first general in the "War on Cancer" by President Nixon. His childhood was spent with a certain curiousity about his father's work and the scientists who would come over for dinner and talk about the research they were doing on cancer. He can remember Nixon's helicopter landing at Fort Detrick, Maryland in order to pass over the keys, where his father could use Fort Detrick as a cancer research facility.  He recalls his fascination as he is now, Dr. Rauscher, a cancer researcher, professor of molecular genetics at the University of Pennsylvania and deputy director of Wistar Institute.  Frank J. Rausher has two children who are also comfortable in the lab. His daughter Griffin is 9.7, and Frank J. Rauscher IV is 4.6, they also have researcher in their genes.

Scandalous radiologist revealed

His name is Dr. Amjad Husien, and he is the accused radiologist. He has supposedly misinterpreted twenty-two mammograms causing near life threatening case of breast cancer.  Delays of up to two years were severe consequences to Dr. Husien's missed detetections. It is a sad story of deceit, mistakes, confusion and delay. I am sorry to say that there were victims who suffered through masectomies, and arduous fights with chemo, which could of been avoided had Dr. Husien done his job correctly. A spokesman for the hospital has said that they must wait for the outcome of the investiagation before determining what action if any, should be done.Currently Dr. Husien has been suspended and was not at his home last night when reporters went to ask questions.

Cash moves us to ponder what happens after death

Her father was Johnny Cash,  who died in 2003 from complications from diabetes, at the age of 71, his daughter has said this is not a tribute album, but it is about grieving, mourning, and letting go. Rosanne Cash has plenty of life experience to go on, her mother June died of heart complications. Her step-mother Vivian Liberto died on her birthday last May from lung cancer. The story is endless, and heartbreaking.  I can't wait to listen to her new sound, and how she is dealing with the death of her parents. I hope it gives others an outlet in which to grieve those they have loved. Hang in there. Everybody.

Iraq soldier equates war with cancer

This an eloquently written analogy on fighting the war in Iraq, like we fight cancer. Attack it at the source. I imagine some may not agree, and I am not sure I  do, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this is one to consider. I need to mention it is an old entry, but still thought provoking, especially since we are still fighting Iraq.

I am mostly intrigued by the member of the health sciences and his feelings on this statement being totally absurd. I am proud of him for putting his opinion out there!

He is over there, in harms way, and has every right to feel how ever he wants. But that is just my opinion. I did enjoy this blog, even though it really isn't cancer related. I wanted to share this view, and the blog is great regardless.  Would you want a doctor telling you, I am only treat you for one year, and then we are pulling out? Something to think about.

Fish oil gets support for heart disease not cancer

The American Cancer Society and The American Heart Association have both made comments pertaining to a recent study on the benefits of fish oil. It has been tried and tested for the past 30 years, with 700,000 patients. Today it was officially stated that fish oil, or more specifically omega-3 fatty acids, does not help in the prevention of cancer. It does have many other health benefits such as reducing the risk of heart disease, boosting brain function, and helping to keeps skin moist.  The 38 studies recently conducted are too heterogeneous, involving different groups, variety of fish oil consumption. More studies need to be considered to claim omega-3 is beneficial in the prevention of cancer.  The American Heart Association recommends at least two servings of fish per week to help prevent heart disease.  The American Cancer Society recommends fish as a protein source as it does not contain high amounts of saturated fats which scientists have mentioned could increase risks for prostate and colon cancer.  So basically keep eating fish, as it can't hurt.

Mistake in diagnosis

I would be so flabbergasted if this following story happened to me. Apparently a radiologist gave 17 women a positive prognosis expressing they were clear of cancer, now they have been told of a risk of death from breast cancer. I feel shocked that this could happen. Imagine how these women must feel. It seems the radiologist was the only one employed by the hospitals he worked for, so no second radiologist was there to check him, or each other for that matter. All of his tests have been recalled and have been under examination. The Government has been asked to help these women financially to be able to fight cancer, they once thought were clear of. Good Luck Ladies!

University of Iowa hosts meet for breast cancer

The GymHawks, University of Iowa's gymnastics team is hosting a meet Saturday, January 28th, 2006 in order to bring more awareness to breast cancer. Called the "Think Pink" competition, will donate 50 percent of proceeds toward the cause. The competition against Iowa State starts at 7:00 at the Field House and the gymnists from both Iowa State and the University of Iowa will be wearing pink. The coach Tayla Vexler has expressed excitement for this meet because it is the first home game of the season and I wish I could be there. I am from Iowa, and would love to support the cause by buying a ticket. Good luck teams!

Cancer clues for elderly

A high white blood cell count, a widely recognized sign of an infection, is now also a clue to cancer death. A study of 3,000 older Australians with an elevated white blood cell count were found more likely to die of cancer. This article can be found in the Archives of Internal Medicine. For individuals who smoke or have chronic or acute infections will often have a high white blood cell count. Individuals with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, will also have an elevated WBC and have and increased mortality rate from cancer. It has not been determined if a high WBC can predict cancer. The study suggests the development of cancer could be decreased by the use of aspirin. Aspirin is usually a maintance regimen for those at risk of heart disease. It is becoming apparent to me how tangled and intricate our bodies are, with each system relying and depending on the other one.

Jon Sudbo admits to more cheating

This just angers me. What a fraud. What was he thinking? Why did he do it? I may never get the answers, but for what it is worth, he is attempting honesty now. He claims it was not all about the money. Yet he faked two other reports, not just the one he was caught faking.  A total of three articles were tampered with by Sudbo. One of them for an article in the New England Journal of Medicine in April of 2004, another in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in March 2005 and the one in the Lancet in October 2005.  Sudbo has been on sick leave since Radium Hospitalet accused him of cheating. He has not commented publicly yet, and I can't wait until he does.

Alicia's story, fighting alveolar soft part sarcoma

Alicia Parlette tells about what she takes to deal with the pain, how to get her appetite back and even her struggles to keep up with her friends, young and able bodied. She has just celebrated her 24th birthday, is a copy editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and a tough cookie. I love her story telling and explanation on pain. I can understand her confusion when a friend is watching her limp and she is embarrassed, yet he is only concerned. I hope she gets her birthday wish. I hope you put her in your thoughts, and check out her writing, she is great.

Cancer and Infection predominant killers of HIV patients

A new study of the leading causes of death to patients who live and cope with HIV, and taking the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), infection and cancer remain the top two. In The Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes of the February 1st, 2006 edition it states that  infection is continually the leading cause of HIV patients. Cancer is the second leading cause of death, and has maintained this ranking since 1997. All cases of  HIV patients taking HAART fell dramatically since the induction in 1996. It must be noted that these studies are compiled from a study population who have access to free HIV medication, open access to medical care, a low rate of drug use and hepatitis C co-infection.

Skin Cancer increasing among Hispanics

Skin cancer is a growing problem among California Hispanics. This is first time, scientists have charted a noteable increase in the rate of melanoma. A study published in the March, 1 2006 issue of CANCER reports. Melanoma accounts for the least amount of skin cancers, albeit the deadliest. Fair skin and a significant amount of sun exposure are major contributing factors for the development of melanoma. The authors of the report have found the in years 1988 and 2001 the rate of invasive melanoma among male Hispanics has increased compared to HIspanic women and non-Hispanic whites. Yet, little is known about the increase of melanoma rates for Hispanics in California.

National Cancer Registry organizes a meeting with South African Health Minister

The National Health Cancer Registry, has organized a meeting to discuss with the Health Minister how collecting of cancer data must improve in South Africa. The last statistics were released in 1999, at that point at least 60,000 new cases were reported. Mandating cancer be reported would imoprove the collection, and assess a feeling for the amount of care is needed for South Africans. Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is to talk about the need for making cancer notifiably a  disease.  At this point it is very difficult to ascertain how prevalent cancer is in South Africa.

Blogger from The Joplin Globe on uterine cancer

A daring and open interpretation of the battle against uterine cancer is told through the eyes of a reporter for the Joplin Globe. Carol Stark's lamentations are all honest and eye-opening. Not being able to think clearly due to chemotherapy as she fights this daunting cancer is almost laughable in her words. It is enjoyable to hear her realistic account of cutting her hair. I hope she continues her writing. I thoroughly enjoy her "motsy".  I also hope she had a good week-end.

Fraudulent data sent to researchers

The author of a supposed study on oral cancer sent fraudulent data to researchers at Houston's University of Texas M.D. Anderson. The four researchers analyzed the data sent to them by Jon Sudbo, the Norwegian%uFFFDdoctor working at Radium Hospital. The information involved fictitious patients, which betrayed a trust factor which researchers rely on where scientists do what they say they are doing. It is a great disappointment to the researchers who were played fool to the published reports. Jon Subbo has admitted to his bosses at the aforementioned hospital and the Comprehensive Cancer Center in Oslo that he fabricated the 250 patients (they all had the same birthday).
