The Jimmy Fund: the boy behind the charity

In 1948, Einar Gustafson, 12, was a child being treated for cancer by Dr. Sidney Farber, considered a pioneer of modern chemotherapy. Gustafson was selected to speak on Ralph Edwards national radio program, "Truth or Consequences," and to protect his privacy, was simply called "Jimmy" for the broadcast. During the national broadcast, held in the boy's hospital room, Gustafson visited with his heroes from the Braves baseball team, as they stood by his hospital bed. The show raised more than $200,000 dollars from listeners to the benefit of Dr. Farber's research and Children's Cancer Research Foundation. The Jimmy Fund was born.

Einar "Jimmy" Gustafson went on to make many public appearances at The Jimmy Fund events, and was considered an inspiration to many people in New England. Then Gustafson disappeared. For years, everyone at the Children's Cancer Research Foundation, renamed the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, believed the boy had died, because cure rates for pediatric cancers were so low during the era in which he was treated. Gustafson remained anonymous until 1998, the 50th anniversary of the original radio broadcast.

After his return to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Gustafson went from years of public anonymity to celebrity status. People Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and newspapers nationwide, told the story of Einar "Jimmy" Gustafson. He was named honorary chairman of The Jimmy Fund. Today, The Jimmy Fund, working toward "a world without cancer," enjoys the major fundraising efforts of the Boston Red Sox, Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, Jimmy Fund Council of Greater Boston, The Pan-Massachusetts cross-state bicycle ride, Challenge Scooper Bowl ice cream extravaganza, The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, and many other organizations who raise funds for the charity. Great things can happen from the simplest of beginnings.

Hit Men and Cops join forces for cancer

The Calgary Hitmen and Cops for Cancer are joining forces to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. They will take to the ice ready to shave their heads for the cancer charity following Friday's game against the Regina Pats.

In 1994, Cops for Cancer began when an Edmonton police officer heard about Lyle, a five-year-old boy with cancer who had lost his hair to chemotherapy treatments, and was being teased at school because of his hair loss. The officer, who was already sporting a shaved head, asked Lyle if he would like his picture taken with him in a police cruiser. According to the officer, he wanted to do it to show Lyle it was cool to be bald and at the same time had hoped to make other kids recognize this and perhaps even feel a bit jealous of the boy. When other police officers heard about the plan, they shaved their heads to be in the photo with Lyle. In total, seven police officers posed with Lyle the day of the photo, and the story received national attention.

Cops for Cancer was born and is active 12 years later, as fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society by cops include public head shaving, coin collections, golf tournaments, BBQs, softball tournaments, ironman teams, road races and other events across the country.

American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days

In March, the American Cancer Society, ACS, launches the nationwide Daffodil Days program, a chance for individuals and community groups to contribute to the Society's mission of providing education and support for those who have been affected by cancer, and to raise funding for continuing research in finding a cancer cure. To the ACS, the daffodil, one of the first flowers of spring, is a symbol of hope for a world free of cancer. You can contribute online, with the Daffodil Days e-Card® program, which allows you to send a Daffodil e-Card to anyone, anywhere, at any time, for any reason. Or, you can give the Gift of Hope, and by making a contribution in honor of a loved one, a local Society volunteer will deliver a bouquet of daffodils anonymously to a cancer patient at a medical center in your community.
