Since 1986, Caroline Ha Ha has been dispensing compassionate laughter
as medicine. While visiting a cancer ward, she began to use humor as a way to entertain cancer patients, whose days of
treatment were often long and boring. When Caroline decided to take her humor seriously, she asked Dr. David
Kleinbaugh, who was studying the relationship between humor and health, to join her. Together they started the Duke
Humor Project. Cancer patients are visited by volunteers wearing red, rubber noses or wiggly antennae, pushing a mobile
cart stocked with rubber chickens, funny books and movies, who entertain them by clowning around, telling jokes,
performing yo-yo tricks, making balloon animals -- whatever it takes to get a cancer patient to laugh. Laughter may
not, purely on its own merits, cure disease, but research has shown laughter can relax, reduce pain, lower blood
pressure and strengthen the immune system.Note: The contents of this blog are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as medical advice or substitute for professional care. For medical emergencies, dial 911!
