In 2004, Brian Fies mother was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. Fies created a serialized web comic strip
called Mom's Cancer, as a way to express and come to terms with the emotional
issues of watching his mother struggle with the challenges of facing life and death with cancer. As with all good
things to be found on the Internet, readership grew from one person discovering Mom's Cancer, and telling someone else
where to find it. As Fies says, "People who needed the story found it and told their friends about it." In July 2005, Mom's Cancer won the comic industry's coveted Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic, a new category that year. This Spring, Mom's Cancer became available as a hardcover book, published by Abrams Image. Fies blogs about Mom's Cancer as news and notes from the creator of Mom's Cancer.
