Navy Soccer teams play for cancer

Today, Fox Soccer Channel will air the 10th Annual KICKS Against Breast Cancer / SHUT-OUT Cancer Tournaments, at the 19-field Soccerplex in Germantown, Maryland. The tournament is held each April with top national collegiate soccer teams competing in the event. All proceeds go to the Howard County General Hospital’s Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in honor of Claudia Mayer, who died at the age of 47 of breast cancer; and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults named after Doug Ulman, who at 19, was a healthy student and Division I soccer player at Brown University, when he began having problems breathing. He was diagnosed with cancer. Frustrated by the lack of support programs for young adults facing cancer, Doug and his family created The Ulman Cancer Fund For Young Adults. Doug is now a three-time cancer survivor, President of the Board for the UCF, and Director of Survivorship for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

According to the organizers of this weekend soccer event, 20 of the best men’s and women’s college soccer programs will compete. One of these groups will be Navy soccer teams. On the field, the Navy men's team will face off against Rutgers at 10:30 a.m., and against George Mason at 3:00 p.m. The women's team will play Georgetown at 10:30 a.m., and Old Dominion at 1:30 p.m. Go to KICKS Against Breast Cancer and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults for more information.

The Cancer Mosaic: fighting cancer one tile at a time

Will Swetnam is a force of one. He actively supports the cancer community in his contribution of talent and participation in Cyclists Combating Cancer, CCC, as a volunteer for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, LAF, and on a personal level, answering the cancer survivor call to reach out whenever someone new is diagnosed with cancer. Swetnam has a new project this year, called The Cancer Mosaic. The mosaic of squares is a webpage comprised of photos of people who have been affected by cancer. For a $20 donation, a photo will be placed in the square of the donor's choosing, as long as that tile is not already taken. When a visitor clicks on the tile, a larger image of the photo will appear, with the honoree's name, a comment line, and a short bio about the person in the photo. All funds raised by The Cancer Mosaic go directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

"The goal is to help people understand the impact of this disease is terrible and widespread, as they will see all ages, colors, creeds, of both men and women in the mosaic. The current space has locations for 2500 tiles, but I'll add additional "panels" as the tiles sell. The site will remain active, new "panels" added each year, until a cure has been found, " explains Swetnam, of his new project, The Cancer Mosaic.

Cyclists Combating Cancer: survivors passion for cycling

Will Swetnam is a 15 year non-hodgkins lymphoma cancer survivor. Ten years ago, he lost his father to prostate cancer. Swetnam is the Cyclists Combating Cancer, CCC, webmaster and list serve moderator. The CCC is a group of cancer survivors, and their families and friends, who offer cancer survivorship support to one another and who share a passion for cycling. CCC members are all ages, and at all levels of skill, when it comes to cycling - from road riding, and mountain biking, to triathlons.

The CCC group fosters close bonds within the group, sharing moments of joy and sadness, and inspiring a strength within each other to face the special issues of cancer survivorship. If cancer has touched your life, the CCC invites you to join their peloton.

In addition to the CCC work that Swetnam does, he is a six-year volunteer for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, LAF, who always makes time to counsel friends and friends of friends who are diagnosed with cancer.

The profit, philanthropy and politics of cancer survivors

Profit, philanthropy and politics are the foundation for the joining of forces between Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion, and Jim Stowers, Jr, mutual fund magnate. Armstrong will join American Century Investments in a multimillion-dollar advertising and marketing campaign featuring Armstrong as the spokesperson for the company's  newest  series of mutual funds, appropriately named Livestrong Portfolios, using Armstrong Foundation’s “Livestrong” slogan for cancer survivors. The American Century Investments campaign slogan featuring Armstrong is “Put Your Lance Face On.” Both Armstrong and Stowers are cancer survivors.

Armstrong is a testicular cancer survivor, who founded the Lance Armstrong and Livestrong Foundation, to address the special issues of cancer survivorship through education, advocacy, public health and research programs. Stowers and his wife, Virginia, are cancer survivors who founded the Stowers Institute for Medical Research for biomedical research. Both Armstrong and Stowers support stem-cell research, a hotly-debated political issue, and indicated that together, they may be involved in the protection and advancement of this research.
