Smoking deaths to reach 1 billion by end of century

Every year 4.5 million people die from smoking related to deaths. Of that staggering number nearly half of the deaths are in developing countries where medical care and health education are limited or non-existent. One of the fastest growing smoking populations is among teens in both rich and poor countries across the world. With the above statistics and the growing trend of younger smokers, the overall death toll for smokers could likely reach one billion before the end of the century.

Many governments are flummoxed by how exactly to handle this problem. Singapore, Australia and Thailand have implemented tougher anti-smoking campaigns and have found success in cutting the number of smokers within their borders. Other countries are hoping that drastic measures such as much higher taxes on cigarettes, a ban on public advertising and banning public smoking will help.

The concern for smoking related deaths has prompted representatives from nearly 150 countries to meet and discuss possible solutions to the problem. With so many minds mulling over the issues perhaps some solutions can be found.

Patsy Ramsey: daughter JonBenet murderer arrested

When Patsy Ramsey passed away from a recurrence of ovarian cancer two months ago, many felt she died under the shadow of suspicion concerning her possible involvement in the murder of her six-year-old daughter JonBenet, whose beaten and strangled body was found by her father John Ramsey in the basement of her family's home in Boulder, Colorado.

At the time of Patsy Ramsey's death, the family attorney Lin Wood said, "I think people will remember Patsy as being someone who was falsely accused in connection with the death of her daughter when she should be remembered for being an incredibly loving mother, wonderful wife, and person who showed great courage in fighting a vicious disease over the last many years."

Today, breaking news reveals that a suspect has been arrested in the murder of JonBenet. Confessing to elements of the crime, the 42-year-old American second-grade school teacher John Karr was apprehended in Thailand.

John Ramsey confirmed in a written statement that Patsy was aware of the authorities interest in the suspect and she died knowing that the case was about to be solved and the murderer of her child was about to be brought to justice. She did not leave this world not knowing.

Cigarette packs to feature cancer photos

In the knowledge that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words, New Zealand's Ministry of Health wants the health warning on cigarette packs to include large graphic photos of smokers with throat cancer or rotting teeth and gums.

According to the news report, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Thailand have already adopted graphic warnings and many other countries are also considering making the change. I live in the U.S. and I have never seen a pack of cigarettes with a graphic warning such as the one New Zealand is proposing, but I think that it might be more effective than mere wording. I went and searched images with throat cancer and the graphic photos that came up were -- well -- let's just say the damage cigarette smoking can do is not very pretty. I wonder why the U.S. hasn't adopted this same sort of warning campaign?
