Pamela Edy Schlotter had one heck of a mother. At 78 and terminally ill with lung cancer, Schlotter's mother did not languish in bed. Instead she packed up her bags and went on adventures across the West and South West to visit her grown children and see the sights. One trip was a train ride across California, Utah and into the mountains of Colorado. Despite her need for constant oxygen, this brave woman held her head high and tackled the last months of her life with an amazing verve. On their last trip, Ms. Schlotter's mother passed away during the night. The previous day her breathing had become labored and after a brief phone consultation with doctors, her daughter knew the end was fast approaching for her mother. Although shocked by this final realization, Schlotter was grateful to have spent the last eight months of her mother's life adventuring about the West in search of fun and good times.
