In my mother's words

Zach Urlocker lost his mother Mary to ovarian cancer on July 4th. During the last year of Mary's struggles and challenges in her fight against ovarian cancer, Zach blogged Tuesdays With Mary as a way to keep family and friends informed of his mother's progress. He also wanted to be a resource for other families facing ovarian cancer.

In a recent post, Zach shares that shortly after his mother died, the family discovered a diary. The family was not aware that she had kept a diary. At the time of the discovery of Mary's diary, Zach said he could not bring himself to read it, and the diary sat on his desk for several weeks. Finally opening the pages, he describes the writing as raw and personal. He has chosen to share some entries that his mother wrote on the Tuesdays With Mary blog.

Mary's diary begins, April 29, 1999 -- Hysterectomy. This is my journal, so I believe I can swear all I want to. Today we saw Dr. Manus (chemo) -- overwhelming -- 3 hrs there -- I feel that I had no control over what is happening. Would like to run away & hide ... continue reading here.

Sunday in the cancer blogging community

Zach blogs at Tuesdays with Mary about All My Wife Wanted, pointing readers to a touching story in the Belfast Telegraph entitled "All my wife wanted was to see her little girl grow up."

Amanda of Cancer. it's not just an astrological sign anymore blogs The Leukemia's Back, about her husband Eric being diagnosed with leukemia - again. Amanda and Eric have been married for almost two years, although they have been together for eight years. During their time together, Eric has had two occurrences of acute lymphocytic leukemia. Just when they thought, maybe, just maybe, they were on the other side of his cancer, it's back.

Cary of Cancer News Watch blogs The War On Cancer Takes A Back Seat To The War In Iraq in which he asks, "Think the US has its priorities straight? Consider that the entire proposed budget for the National Cancer Institute next year will be about the same amount of money we are currently spending on a few weeks worth of destruction in Iraq." Cary is caregiver to his wife, who was diagnosed with cancer shortly after they were married. In another post, Cary posts The Anger Is Eating Me From The Inside about the many reasons why he hates cancer and why sometimes it’s all just too much.

Trish, at Blogging For A Cause blogs At a Loss for Words reflectively when she says "I want to say something, anything, to make the pain go away. But what can I say? “Hang in there”? I just don’t know what to say. I feel so impotent. I’m just at a loss for words. I want to be there, to help. But how?" Trish, Cary, Amanda, Zach, and many other bright lights in the cancer blogging community continue to blog, continue to be there, even when blogging cancer reality is almost too painful for words, even when no one knows what to say. If you have a moment, stop by and let them know they are not alone.

Tuesdays with Mary

From a son's loving, often heartbreakingly poignant perspective, Zack Urlocker blogs his mother's fight against ovarian cancer in Tuesdays With Mary . Until recently, Mary was in hospice care, and not doing too well. However, in a recent turn of events, the doctors have cancelled hospice care for Mary, based on her continuing improvement and strength. Mary will resume chemotherapy to battle ovarian cancer. Urlocker keeps this online diary to let others know how his mother is doing and how family and friends are coping.

Chemotherapy is not a walk in the park, and no one would wish the ordeal of chemotherapy on anyone. However, for Mary, and her family and friends, this new direction is an occasion of hope. As Mary said, "Cancel the funeral. I just told people I had cancer to see who my friends really are."
