I'm Too Young For This! (i2y) is a recently launched portal for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Featured i2y resources and support services include survivor spa retreats, online forums and blogs, social networking, camping excursions, fertility education, peer counseling, and financial scholarships.

"The i2y website is primed to become a premiere online resource for AYAs with cancer by eliminating the stress and hassle of navigating through thousands of search engine results," said Matthew Zachary, founder and executive director of Steps For Living and an 11-year young adult survivor of pediatric brain cancer. "Our goal to make I'm Too Young For This! the first place adolescents and young adults with cancer think of to go when in search of credible, targeted support programs, tools and services."

World Cancer Research Fund is one of five charities involved in The One Million Masterpiece global art project that is attempting to reflect the true view of our global society by inviting one million people to work on one single piece of art. Each person will contribute one piece to the work of art. No one knows if it will end as a patchwork of a million small squares of artwork, or a larger picture will emerge that cannot be predicted ahead of time. One million images to make one global masterpiece.

Each person who signs up will create an image online. It can correspond to an adjacent piece of art or be singular and separate in creation. In of itself the project is intriguing but it has been launched to serve a greater purpose -- to benefit five charities. One of the charities is the World Cancer Research Fund's Global Network, a network of organizations funding research into dietary patterns of different cultures and how they relate to development of various cancers throughout the world.

You can view the pieces of art as they are coming together at The One Million Masterpiece -- and quite possibly become one of one million artists working on a serendipitous creation of global proportion.

Together with Jana Rosenblatt, founder of Chemo Chicks and ovarian cancer survivor, they created a kit that other cancer patients can have fun using to lessen the trauma of chemotherapy hair loss. According to Jana, her head tattoo makes every one who sees it smile -- which makes her smile.

Makeup artist Lori Ovitz has taken her twenty years of cosmetics experience in making celebrities and top models look beautiful, and written Facing the Mirror with Cancer, a book of tips and techniques to help cancer patients look less tired and create a natural glow at a time when cancer treatments can take a physical toll.

Ovitz began volunteering at University of Chicago hospitals working with cancer patients to teach them how to enhance their personal appearance using makeup. According to Ovitz, "Makeup is a very accessible, inexpensive way to make significant changes to your appearance. The tremendous gratitude that I've received from each patient I've worked with inspired me to write Facing the Mirror with Cancer -- A Guide to Using Makeup to make a Difference."

To publish her book, Ovitz and her husband Bruce, a 35 year cancer survivor, created Belle Press -- named to honor the memory of her grandmother Belle Michel -- so that 50 percent of the profits from the book could go to cancer research.

"Cancer does not have to rob you of self-esteem or beauty. By teaching cancer patients how to apply makeup, I've seen firsthand what an incredible transformation occurs in their appearance and how much better they feel about themselves. I've written this book because I want to reach cancer patients everywhere so they can learn the tricks of my trade," Lori Ovitz states with assurance.

Karen de Balbian Verster, artist, writer and poet, is a breast cancer survivor. After her second cancer diagnosis she began attending art workshops at Gilda's Club and got back into painting, which she says was healing since painting uses a different part of her brain than writing. Currently, her artwork, including monotypes, monotype collages, oils and watercolors, are on display in Stroudsburg. Her writing brings us the book, Boob: A Story of Sex, Cancer and Stupidity, now published and available in bookstores.

Her novel is a fictional tale that begins with the reality of a terminal breast cancer diagnosis for Kyra Copperfield. But then Kyra is abducted by a serial killer who promises to delay killing her if she amuses him by telling stories about herself. The author, de Balbian Verster describes it as a Scheherazade meets Hannibal. Kyra figures it is a slow, painful death either way.

You have to admit, as far as inspirational breast cancer recovery books written by breast cancer survivors go, this one has a different twist. At least it's the first one I have run across involving a serial killer. Of the possible scenarios in what could be worse than being diagnosed with cancer -- and I can think of few things that could be worse -- being abducted by a serial killer certainly ranks right up there.
