'Macho Men' may have increased bowel cancer chances

If you're a man and into the phrase "don't fix it until it's broken," you could be putting yourself at harm by not seeking regular checkups and preventative measures, according to research from the UK.

Researchers there say that "macho men" attitudes preclude many men from checking in with their doctors at certain ages instead of being scared about possible symptoms -- and even entering the doctor's office to have things checked out.

While it's good to be masculine and have that attitude (if it suits you), preventative measures against possible cancer (even with symptoms) are prudent regardless, right? It's only your life.

Atkin's Diet increases bowel cancer risk?

Low-carb diets like the Atkin's Diet may actually increase the risk of bowel cancer, according to scientists. The link between a specific kind of fatty acid production in the gut and consuming carbohydrates may be the cause, as a lack of those fatty acids (called butyrates) protect against colorectal cancer.

Low-carbohydrates diets, which were made famous by the Atkin's Diet, cause a four-fold reduction in the butyrate cancer-fighting bacteria, and therefore reduce the body's capability to fight off bowel cancer by itself.

This is quite an interesting development, since low-carb diets are still popular today and are followed by millions of people in the U.S. It makes sense, however, that major diet changes can spark up the risk of certain cancers, so oddly enough, maybe this should not be a total surprise.

Mr. Testicles: an eccentric prostate cancer fundraiser

Patrick Cox, of Great Britain, better known as the eccentric "Mr. Testicles," is the founder of the Male Cancer Awareness Campaign. Cox, 32, is determined to raise £50,000 for his campaign, and is doing so by showing up in his attention-getting costume at marathons and train stations for prostate, bowel and testicular cancer awareness. A familiar sight to many in Great Britain, he spends more than 100 hours a week seeking donations from the public, in very public places. The mission of the Male Cancer Awareness Campaign is to educate men on the importance of self awareness, that embarrassment kills, and early detection saves lives. And who wouldn't donate to someone who is willing to go to this level of silliness to raise awareness for a serious cause?
