A new twist on the broken breast cancer bracelet

My brother-in-law just read the post I wrote about his allegiance to the pink breast cancer bracelet -- the one that snapped after three solid years of wear, the one he replaced a day later.

I wrote my previous post in an attempt to give meaning to this perhaps symbolic happening. A breast cancer bracelet breaks -- what could that mean? I took a stab my own interpretation. My thoughts are featured in that post, On broken cancer bracelets. Now, Jack is weighing in with his own twist on the matter. I like his version.

Jack says his bracelet, worn ever since I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004, broke because I am free of cancer. The bracelet is no longer necessary. End of cancer. End of bracelet. End of story.

Thought for the Day: Bracelets tell when to seek shade

Along the pike comes a new product designed to send us an alert when we've had too much sun.

Think about this:

There are some fun and fancy bracelets on the market that change color when it's time to seek shade.

UV Sol Beads, made with UV-detective pony beads and a removable fashion bead, feature off-white beads that remain off-white whenever there is an absence of UV light. When exposed to UV light, the intensity of the beads' color increases as the amount of exposure increases.

Showing support through jewelry

Personal expression showing support for causes is a big business these days. Almost any surface is game for this: car bumpers, rearview mirrors, lapels and wrists just to name a few. Aside from bumper stickers, the most common show of support appears to be rubber bracelets. First popularized by Lance Armstrong's bright yellow LiveStrong bands, wrist wear has branched out to many causes. The Shanrene for Charity organization offers a wide variety of bracelets for everything from cancer to cardiac health. In 2005 the company donated over $100,000 to charities supporting causes such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, leukemia, Supporting our Troops, Tsunami Relief, heart disease, AIDS and domestic abuse.  For each rubber bracelet sold, Shanrene donates fifty cents to the appointed organization, while higher priced items such as crystal bracelets yield a 10% donation.  Visit the site to view the offering of a wide variety of jewelry ranging from casual hip to higher end items.
