Opera singer Beverly Sills is reportedly at a Manhattan hospital, gravely ill with cancer and with her daughter by her side. This comes from the Associated Press and while those who know her best neither confirm nor deny the news, Sills did cite health and family reasons when she resigned as chairwoman of the Metropolitan Opera two years ago.

Cancer first struck Sills in 1974. She underwent successful surgery and went on to make her Met singing debut in 1975.

Sills, 78, first hit the opera circuit in 1947 in Philadelphia. She had a bit role in Carmen and later became a star with the smaller New York City Opera and was acclaimed for performances in Douglas Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe, Massenet's Manon, and Handel's Guilio Cesare. Known by the nickname Bubbles -- which some say matches her personality perfectly -- the red-haired diva made many appearances on The Tonight Show and The Muppet Show. She also sang often with her friend Carol Burnett.

The technique, known as radioembolization or intra-arterial brachytherapy, uses the vascular system to deliver targeted treatment to the tumor. The tiny glass bubbles filled with radioactive material deliver high doses of tumor-killing radiation directly to the liver tumors.

Liver tumors use a supply of blood that is largely separate from the blood that nourishes normal liver tissue, so very few of the bubbles end up in the healthy liver.

The bubbles are smaller than the diameter of a human hair. The outpatient procedure takes about an hour to complete. The bubbles release over 10-14 days.

Patients may be candidates for this procedure if they are not able to get a liver transplant. Mayo Clinic radiation oncologists are now using this procedure.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a health warning to consumers that drinking high-strength hydrogen peroxide products sold online are extremely corrosive and can lead to stomach irritation or ulcers; and injecting the solution intravenously could lead to blood vessel inflammation, bubbles in blood vessels and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

In addition, the FDA has issued warnings to two Texas-based firms, DFWX and Frad 35 Inc., who are illegally selling 35 percent hydrogen peroxide products to treat AIDS, cancer, emphysema and other serious diseases.

To understand the strength of the hydrogen peroxide the FDA is referring to, high-strength hydrogen peroxide is 35 percent while the strength of hydrogen peroxide solution sold over-the-counter for disinfecting wounds is only 3 percent.

According to the news release, Donald Worden, owner of Frad 35 Inc., said he would continue selling his 35 percent hydrogen peroxide product and that his website provided links to information about potential medical uses but that he was not promoting his products for that purpose.

The FDA has issued a warning about this product. You have been warned.
