There are a number of benefits to a vegetarian diet and here's another one:
Lifelong vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing colorectal cancer. The reason why is not made clear in the article but rather just that there's a link. So I wonder: What is it about a vegetarian diet that makes it healthier? Is it that vegetarians consumer more nutrients and antioxidants and less saturated fat? Does it have something to do with how non-meat food is digested? Is it because vegetarian diets are overall lower in calories and therefore less metabolizing means less harmful free agents in the body?
I don't think this one study is a reason to quit eating meat, and although I'm not a big meat eater myself, I think that it can be part of a healthy diet if consumed in moderation and balanced out with lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains. What do you think? To eat meat or not to eat meat?

A little bit of education goes a long way, especially in the war against cancer. Armed with facts and figures and know-how, we can help advance prevention and early detection of this deadly disease.
So in the spirit of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, here are seven truths that serve to broaden your horizons about the third most common cancer found in men and women in this country.
As you read these truths, be aware that the death rate from colorectal cancer has been on a downward climb for the past 15 years due to better screening, fewer diagnosed cases, early detection, and more advanced treatment. Keep in mind that you can help keep this trend going by raising your own awareness and by taking action on behalf of yourself and your loved ones.
- Colorectal cancer refers to cancer that starts in the colon or rectum. These cancers begin in the digestive system where food is processed to create energy and rid the body of solid waste matter.
- Colorectal cancers develop slowly over a period of years and mostly begin in the form of polyps -- growths of tissue that start in the lining and grow into the center of the colon or rectum. Removing polyps early may prevent them from becoming cancerous. More than 95 percent of colon and rectal cancers are called adenocarcinomas.
- For people of average risk, screening is recommended beginning at age 50. Those whose risk is higher than average should talk with a physician about appropriate screening.
- Screening is used to detect disease in people who do not have any symptoms. In many cases, screening tests find colorectal cancers at an early stage and greatly improve the chances of successful treatment. Screening tests can prevent some cancers by allowing doctors to find and remove polyps that might become cancer. There are several tests used to look for colorectal cancer. Ask your doctor what test is best for you.
- Treatment for colorectal cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and newer targeted therapies.
- The American Cancer Society predicts there will be 112,340 new cases of colon cancer and 41,420 new cases of rectal cancer in 2007 in the United States. Combined, the diseases will cause about 52,180 deaths.

A decade of research specific to the inherited form of pancreatic cancer has turned up a gene that could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment for one of the deadliest forms of cancer.
The magical gene -- called
palladin -- was discovered at the University of Washington after the extensive study of one family that has lost nine members over four generations to pancreatic cancer and has nine additional members with early signs of the disease.
Washington resident Ryan Chappell, a member of this family who had his pancreas removed just before cancer could strike, is very excited about this breakthrough.
"I feel really good that my family has not suffered (in vain)," the 21-year-old says. "Something has been accomplished from their contribution."
What the Chappell family has contributed to research is an understanding of a breakdown in a gene that makes a protein for the skeleton of pancreas cells. In this one family, the gene was mutated and produced large amounts of a misshapen protein that rolls like tumbleweed through the body, migrating 50 percent faster than other cells.
Scientists hope to translate their research findings into a diagnostic test to find excess amounts of the protein and to prevent the cancer cells from moving.
For now, early detection of pancreatic cancer rare because the pancreas is deep in the body, making it difficult to feel or see tumors through imaging tests. Symptoms -- like jaundice, abdominal and back pain, and digestive problems -- usually surface only after the cancer has spread.
Cancer of the pancreas is rare but is the third-leading cause of cancer death among people age 40 to 60.

Chemotherapy can upset the digestive system. It can cause nausea and vomiting -- although I never did throw up during my own chemotherapy, thanks to medication for these side effects. Chemotherapy can diminish overall feelings of wellness and can cause sore gums and mouth sores and dry mouths. Clearly, chemotherapy can ruin an appetite.
But patients receiving chemotherapy need to eat. And they need to drink. They need to maintain nutrition and energy and strength during a physically taxing time. And so the challenge facing many entrenched in chemotherapy is how to eat when the act of chewing, swallowing, and digesting food is so completely unappetizing.
Barbara Curtis shares in a chapter of
Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer Survivor's Soul a recipe that made a difference for her sister during her worst days of chemotherapy.
Her recipe -- for chemo popsicles -- includes essential ingredients. Fruit and tofu provide phytochemicals, protein, and liquids for depleted bodies. The cool popsicle soothes sore mouths and settles stomachs. And the ease of putting together this simple snack is nothing short of tempting.
My advice -- save this recipe. And savor it too.
Chemo PopsiclesFresh-squeezed orange juice, one 8-ounce glass
Frozen mangoes, 1/4 package, or 1 cup frozen berries
1/4 square tofu, medium firmness
One banana
Add passionfruit juice or other fruit juices for flavor
Put all ingredients into a blender. Blend to liquify. Add more juice if mixture is too thick -- it should be as thick as a smoothie. Pour blended mixture into Tupperware or plastic popsicle molds and freeze.

My mom's best friend died from pancreatic cancer just three months after her diagnosis with the disease. One of my co-workers lost her mother to the same disease just weeks after diagnosis. Another co-worker's husband lost his battle with pancreatic cancer after a 15-month all-out fight. And a family friend has somehow been surviving this deadly disease for years now. He's the exception, defying the odds rarely in favor of long-term survival.
About 33,730 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006. Many of them -- 32,300 -- will die from the disease that is rarely caught early. Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

KrisTv has published a feature story on Vicki Barrilleaux, a colon cancer survivor, who has started a colon cancer awareness and screening group in Corpus Christi Texas, and
who claims Katie Couric saved her life.
"Everything I knew prior to my diagnosis was what I had heard from her because of her husband," Barrilleaux said. "I was lucky, I did have some symptoms. Usually, the number one symptom of colon cancer is no symptoms, but I did have some bleeding. I was more aware because I had listened to her. It can be embarrassing, and I don't know if it's something I would have talked to my doctor about if I hadn't had that concern."

On July 20 in Portland, Oregon, Pearl Jam held a benefit concert for the Northwest Chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) to raise awareness for a disease no one likes to discuss. Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis twenty years ago and has gone public with what he personally felt for many years was an embarrassing disease.
McCready, a spokesperson for the NW Chapter of CCFA, said, "Having struggled with Crohn's disease for more than 20 years and experienced first hand difficulties in getting a diagnosis and treatment, I want to help others learn about the disease, how it is affecting them and how to find ways to cope."

A 1/3 cup serving of cooked garbanzo beans contains around 80 calories, no cholesterol, lots of complex carbohydrates, and little fat. In addition, beans are a good source of B vitamins, potassium, and fiber, which promotes digestive health and relieves constipation. Eating beans may help prevent colon cancer, and reduce blood cholesterol which is a leading cause of heart disease.
Hummus is relatively cheap to make with either dried or canned chickpeas. I prefer to cook my own beans. In a stockpot, bring 5 cups water to a boil. Add 1 cup dried garbanzo beans and return to a boil. Remove from the heat; cover tightly and set aside at room temperature 2-3 hours. Drain and rinse the beans. Return the soaked, rinsed beans to the stockpot. Cover the beans with 3 times their volume of water. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat and simmer gently, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until tender. Approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hour. Make sure beans do not boil dry and add a little water as needed. When the beans are tender, drain and immerse them in cold water until cool, then drain well again.
Vicki's Hummus
2 cups cooked garbanzo beans rinsed and drained
3 cloves garlic chopped
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 Tablespoons freshly chopped parsley
1/2 cup tahini
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 pinch cumin powder
Serve with slices of cucumbers, wedges of tomatoes, slices of pita bread, or tortilla chips.

Tomatoes are the best in the summer and now that summer time is upon us, I am anxiously waiting to pick fresh tomatoes from the vines in my back yard as they ripen. Research studies showed that Lycopene which is an antioxidant in tomatoes has a role in fighting prostate cancer. Lycopene supplements became the darling of health-conscious Americans a decade ago, when studies began to link high tomato consumption with a reduced risk of several types of chronic disease. Some studies associated high tomato consumption with a reduced risk of heart disease. Others found evidence that tomatoes help protect against cancer of the prostate, digestive tract, cervix, breast, and lung.
Some people confuse tomatoes with being in the acidifying foods column but they are indeed alkaline and extremely good for you. Again if you are not growing your own tomatoes, buy organic products.
Vicki's Tomato and Basil Salad
4 tomatoes cubed (don't over chop it will turn to puree)
2 cucumbers diced (peeling not necessary)
1 sweet red pepper diced
1 small can sliced black olives (rinse and drain)
10 fresh basil leaves (chopped)
4 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
Toss in a mixing bowl and salt and pepper to taste
If you are a cheese eater you can mix up this recipe by buying some fresh mozzarella cheese balls and dice some up into the salad. but remember cheese in an acidifying food if you are trying to stay strictly alkaline for this diet.

Several facts about mouth and upper digestive tract cancers have led researchers to develop a specially-designed chewing gum that might eliminate the cause of these cancers. The facts are these: 80 percent of mouth and throat cancers are linked to smoking and drinking; smoking and drinking raises the level of acetaldehyde; acetaldehyde is linked to a greater risk of mouth and upper digestive tract cancers; and amino acid l-cysteine can bind effectively to acetaldehyde to block it from causing harm. From these facts, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital
researchers created l-cysteine-containing and acetaldehyde-eliminating tablets. The first commercial product based on this patented method is l-cysteine containing chewing gum.
"We know that with this chewing gum it is possible to eliminate acetaldehyde totally from the saliva during smoking. We do hope that this will in the future turn out to be a novel method for the prevention of alcohol and tobacco smoking associated oral cancers," states Mikko Salaspuro, professor at the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital.
