When Australian pop star Kylie Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, there was a sudden surge in the number of young women requesting breast cancer screening. Minogue's breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 37 raised concern among a younger population of women that breast cancer is a diagnosis that could potentially happen to them. Knowledge is power and education saves lives. The increase in breast cancer awareness became known as the Kylie Effect.

However, the awareness that younger women can develop breast cancer has led some women to age-related conclusions about breast cancer that are not true, and this is also being referred to as the Kylie Effect. According to a recent survey of 2,289 women conducted by Cancer Research UK, 77 percent of the survey participants said that breast cancer risk was higher for women under the age of 70, and 33 percent said that women under the age of 50 were most at risk. The fact is cancer risk increases with age, and four out of five women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50.

"Celebrities with breast cancer like Kylie Minogue and Caron Keating have attracted a lot of publicity -- especially in magazines aimed at younger women. This is very beneficial in that it raises awareness of breast cancer. But the down side is that it may also set up a chain of panic among young women, while misleading older women to think that ageing is not a relevant factor in breast cancer," stated Dr Lesley Walker of Cancer Research UK.

What should younger women do to be breast cancer smart? Do a monthly self exam and if they notice any abnormalities or lumps, insist that tests be done to rule out breast cancer. Realize that while any woman at any age can get breast cancer, the chances increase with age and 80 percent of breast cancer diagnosis happen for women 50 years and older.

From the moment the news broke that Kylie Minogue had been diagnosed with breast cancer, the world has followed her through treatment and into recovery. While she has been spotted recently at various events, she has never spoken at length about the last year that has transformed her life forever.

In a world exclusive interview with Sky One's Cat Deeley, that aired July 16, Kylie Minogue sat down and shared her experiences as a young woman diagnosed with breast cancer -- the effect it had on her and her family -- losing her hair -- coming to terms with being a breast cancer survivor and the fact that being a breast cancer survivor is still sinking in -- staying positive and believing you can get through it as her advice to other young women who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and are undergoing treatment.

I just can't help but see things differently," said Minogue of life as a breast cancer survivor. Both family members and friends of Sharon Osborne have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and she chose her design using the symbol of a cross and heart to represent Hope, Peace and Love. Sienna Miller chose a quote that inspires. Denise Van Outen lost her grandmother to breast cancer last year and chose the rollerskate as her design because it reminds her of her childhood visits with her grandmother.

In the second part of the two-part exclusive interview with ABC's Good Morning America Diane Sawyer, Sheryl Crow shares she is cancer-free and feeling great as a breast cancer survivor. The diagnosis of breast cancer came as a surprise as she is not a smoker and has no family history of the disease. She received enormous support from her family and friends during treatment, whom she refers to as "this incredible tribe of women." Before Dana Reeve died of lung cancer, she gave Crow advice on dealing with the emotional aspects of being a newly-diagnosed cancer patient and dealing with the recent separation from Lance Armstrong by telling her that the only way to go through grief was to grieve.

Crow talked about meditating and changing her diet. "I kind of went into a full-on Eskimo diet, where I ate a lot of salmon. In fact, I'm salmoned out of my brains ... and really green vegetables, just eating really clean, organic food. Listen, I haven't had a doughnut in I can't remember when."

Breast cancer forced Crow into an introspective place of self-realization in facing and overcoming fears -- and the wisdom that comes with that when she said she tried to at least address her fears and not be overcome by them. "The fear of things not always working out. You come to a point in your life where you realize it's not my job to prove to my parents or to my record label or to the world or to my lover that I matter. The fact is that you matter."

"It's not a good place to be concerned with always being right with everybody, always pleasing people, because ultimately you wind up betraying yourself a lot."

Crow shared that she sees her breast cancer diagnosis and being a cancer survivor as part of life's deepening experiences where obstacles are removed and opportunities come in.

Last Friday night, Crow joined the Dave Matthews Band in a concert at Fenway Park. But before she went onstage -- in part of giving back as a cancer survivor --  she made an unannounced surprise visit to Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to visit children with cancer at the Jimmy Fund Clinic.

Ralph Ginzburg, American author, editor, publisher, photojournalist and outspoken advocate of free speech, has died after battling multiple myeloma. According to the Washington Post, among his supporters were playwright Arthur Miller, journalist I.F. Stone and attorney Melvin Belli.

While Ginzburg earned a degree in accounting, it was journalism that he pursued as a career, working for Esquire magazine, NBC, Reader's Digest, Collier's, LOOK -- and was known for his unorthodox methods of using disguises including that of a clergyman to gain entrance to news events. Ginzburg's first publication was An Unhurried View of Erotica, which explored the undercurrent of pornography in English literature. He went on to publish Eros, a periodical containing articles and photo-essays on love and sex, and later still The Housewife's Handbook on Selective Promiscuity. Ginzburg, self-described as a brandied fruitcake of a publisher, was convicted in 1963 for violating federal obscenity laws for promotional activities in publishing books and magazines on erotica and art.

In 1962, Ginzburg was granted an exclusive interview with 17-year-old Bobby Fischer, Portrait of a Genius As a Young Chess Master published by Harpers. According to all accounts, the interview of the reclusive chess genius is still a popular read today. Ginzburg was 76.

The public liked the idea of Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong as a couple, and the media treated them pleasantly when covering them as a couple.

When the marriage was called off, not much was said about it other than announcing it had happened, and the public accepted that sometimes things just don't work out between two people.

However, when the news of Crow's breast cancer diagnosis broke, so soon after the breakup, speculation followed. Had one of the most famous cancer survivors walked out on Crow when the chips were down? It didn't make sense at the time that a man who has dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for cancer survivors would do that -- but since nothing was ever said one way or the other the rumors continued to lurk in the shadows between imagination and fact.

In a two-part exclusive interview with ABC's Good Morning America Diane Sawyer, Sheryl Crow opens up about the breakup with Lance Armstrong and being diagnosed with breast cancer. After being told she had breast cancer, Lance Armstrong was one of the first people she contacted. He was on a solo trip from Lake Tahoe to Oregon. He was about to turn around and return to LA to be with Crow and she told him she did not want him to do that for her. And so, for the personal reasons why the relationship did not work out is a private matter between two good people who insist they still love each other, and past that it should not be our business -- but as Crow makes clear -- Armstrong did not abandon her.

Part two: Sheryl Crow adopts Eskimo diet to fight breast cancer.

In an exclusive interview with ABC Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer, Sheryl Crow talks intimately about the heartbreak and anguish she was forced to deal with when diagnosed with breast cancer -- and at the same time -- the break up of her engagement to be married to Lance Armstrong.

When the subject of the break up with seven-time Tour de France champion Armstrong was brought into the conversation, and the rumor the end of the relationship coincided with her breast cancer diagnosis, Crow says,

"No. No. No, it was really, I mean, really difficult, you know, just really difficult for both of us. I'm not angry. I mean, honestly, I look at it, and I just know that I can't be angry at Lance for being who he is. You know, he's a great person." Armstrong is a testicular cancer survivor.

Despite a threatened lawsuit, The National Enquirer is refusing to back down from its exclusive cover story that Whitney Houston has a brain tumor and states they are standing by the story 100 percent. Meanwhile, multiple-Grammy winning singer Whitney Houston, and her representatives, are denying there is any truth to the rumor and are threatening the tabloid with legal action. Houston has suffered turbulent challenges both professionally and personally over the years, and has been the focus of more than one tabloid story concerning her alleged drug use, career and marriage. It would be sad if she indeed has a brain tumor, but considering the source of the news announcing such a diagnosis, it is difficult to know at this time how much truth there is to the story. Hopefully -- none.
