Sexy. Seductive. Super-intelligent. All aptly describe Sharon Stone. Another is sportswoman, as Stone is an avid golfer. During a recent interview with Golf for Women, she shared a story about her father, also an avid golfer, surviving esophageal cancer by playing golf.

Given three months to live, her father was able to play through his chemotherapy and radiation treatments because of specially-built clubs designed by the golf equipment company Callaway. A feeding tube inserted after surgery prevented him from being able to bend. Without the new clubs, he would not have been able to continue in a much-loved positive activity.

Around the same time, Rob Lowe's father was being treated for cancer with a new targeted drug therapy, Avastin, and they helped Stone obtain the same drug for her father. She attributes the game of golf and the help of her friend Lowe with saving her father's life.

Twenty-two operations later, when Stone's father had successfully beaten cancer, she called the Callaway company to let them know how much a part she believed the company had in her father's recovery. The woman who took the call began to cry because it was the one year anniversary of her own mother's death from cancer and Stone's call lifted her spirits that something the company had done might have helped someone survive cancer.

For many golfers, golf is more than a sport. "Golf teaches you about life, about humanity, about things that will make you a better person," explains Stone. At the end of the article, Stone offers this advice, "Your life is a book; every page you write, you carry with you. You don't get to tear the pages out and throw them away. So write wisely. To honor and support former 1995 Hooters Calendar Cover Girl, Kelly Jo Dowd, who is battling a recurrence of breast cancer that has spread to her organs and bones -- during the 10th Annual Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant in Las Vegas, Hooters gave her a check for $135,000 and announced a $1 million dollar breast cancer research grant in her name through the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Dowd, who is 40, successfully went into remission the first time she was diagnosed with breast cancer, only to have the cancer return, is the only woman to climb Hooters restaurant chain's corporate ladder from waitress, to manager, and to general manager. She is also the proud mother of golfing teen phenom Dakoda Dowd.

The V Foundation was launched during the last year of NC State basketball coach and ESPN broadcaster Jim Valvano's life, when he was diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma, and told he had a year to live. He spent the last year as an advocate in raising cancer awareness by sharing his personal experience as someone facing life and death with cancer. Valvano's message in the fight against cancer was "Don't Give Up ... Don't Ever Give Up!"

Dowd is fighting for her life, and Hooters has stepped in to help her, and other women facing breast cancer and fighting for their lives, in never giving up in the battle.

The 2006 ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic, held at Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley, California, in a benefit to raise money for The V Foundation cancer research grants, raised $1.1 million dollars this year.

George Bodenheimer, Co-Chairman, Disney Media Networks and President, ESPN and ABC Sports announced this record-setting fundraising total at the event attended by celebrities such as National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Julius Dr. J Erving; National Football League Hall of Famer and ESPN commentator Joe Theismann; actor Haley Joel Osmont; 13-year-old golfing phenom Dakoda Dowd; Olympic skier Bode Miller; Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil; and Hercules TV-series star Kevin Sorbo.

The V Foundation was founded by the late NC State basketball coach ESPN broadcaster Jim Valvano and brother Nick Valvano, with a goal to fund cancer research. In the last five years, the foundation has raised over $50 million dollars -- money that has gone to fund cancer research grants nationwide. The V Foundation is involved in advocacy, education, fundraising and philanthropy.

Arnold Palmer, golfing legend and prostate cancer survivor, has donated $2 million dollars to the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute to launch a new cancer prevention division named The Arnold Palmer Endowed Chair in Cancer Prevention. In 1997, Palmer was treated for early-stage prostate cancer. In 1999, his first wife, Winnie lost her life to ovarian cancer. Italian epidemiologist Dr. Emanuela Taioli will head the new division, set to focus on lifestyle and genetic risks for cancer, and ways to understand and prevent cancer from those causes.

"I have confidence that the research successes gained through this initiative will have a far-reaching impact on cancer prevention and quality of life for survivors," said Palmer. Cancer prevention continues to gain more attention and focus of cancer research, thanks in part to the generosity of cancer survivors like Palmer. Mr. Palmer -- we tip our hat to you.

We are saddened to announce Earl Woods has lost his battle with cancer. Tiger Woods has issued a profoundly moving statement about his father here.

Tiger Woods may not defend his title at The Masters in two weeks. It depends on how Earl Woods, his father, who is battling prostate cancer, is fairing. Earlier this week, Tiger Woods walked away from the final practice round at the Players Championship to be with his father, who is credited with nurturing the extraordinary golfing talent of his son, Tiger Woods. Tiger came back to be in the Players Championship at the request of his father. According to newspaper reports, sportscasters and fans, Tiger Woods looks weary, and sounds uncertain about his future plans.

Woods is paired with his friend, Darren Clarke, whose wife, Heather, is battling cancer. "Actually, today the best thing was probably to have a pairing with Darren," Woods said. "Everyone knows Darren is kind of struggling with the same thing. We were talking about it all day." Clarke waved off an interview request after hitting balls on the range.

"It puts things in perspective," Woods said. "You hit a bad shot, and you want to get upset with yourself because you know you can hit better shots, but in the whole scheme of things, it's just a golf shot."
