We're killing ourselves, says Jamie Lee Curtis

Back in 2002, photographs of a somewhat plump Jamie Lee Curtis appeared in many popular magazines. At the time, Curtis was just two years into pursuing sobriety and had gained upwards of 20 pounds. It appeared Curtis was flaunting her new look, perhaps even giving the public permission to be happy in their own skin. Not a bad thing, right?

It was a bad idea, says Curtis who now regrets communicating to the masses that letting yourself go is OK. Because it's not. Now fit and trim -- not skinny, just trim -- Curtis says in the July 2007 issue of Ladies Home Journal, "So I think what some people took from those photos was: Love yourself, no matter what. And the problem with this is: What if what you're doing is unhealthy?"

"And the problem is that how many of us are killing ourselves every day? Who here has high blood pressure and is still eating salt and French fries? Who has been told that her liver is enlarged and unless she stops drinking she's gonna end up with liver disease and/or need a liver transplant? We create senseless acts of violence against ourselves every day. And we live in this amnesia that we're not."

Talk show host Larry King gets True Grit Award

Patrick Wayne, son of late actor John Wayne, says Larry King has true grit. And that's why the CNN talk show host will receive the True Grit Award next month, an honor that hails from the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

King, 73, will receive his honor at the annual Odyssey Ball on April 14 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Jamie Lee Curtis will host the event that will commemorate the centennial of John Wayne's birth.

The Odyssey Ball began 22 years ago and has helped raise more the $14 million to support the John Wayne Cancer Institute's research and treatment programs.

"Larry King epitomizes the strengths and qualities that characterized my father, and for which the True Grit Award was created," said Wayne, who serves as chairman of the board at the institute, located at the Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica.

Founded by the Wayne family in 1981, the institute honors John Wayne who died of stomach cancer in 1979.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver food revolution leads to real change

Celebrity Naked Chef Jamie Oliver has started a true food revolution to ban junk food and get fresh, tasty and, above all, nutritious food back on the school lunch menu. As a result of public demands for better food for England's school children -- inspired in part by Oliver's very vocal and public campaign -- government officials have announced new nutritional standards in how often school children can be served certain foods. According to the new guidelines for school lunches, school meals must be free from low quality meat products, fizzy drinks, crisps, and chocolates. Also banned is the sale of junk food at school and in vending machines. School lunch programs are required to provide at least two portions of fruits and vegetables, and to offer high quality meat, chicken or oily fish on a regular basis.

"This is a really ambitious program," Schools Minister Jim Knight told BBC radio. "It will take a long time to transform a whole culture around food and transform the health content of school meals, undoing decades of neglect." Yes, but change has to start somewhere -- and this seems a good start. Everyone talks about the problems of obesity in children and the long-term health consequences such as an increased risk for cancers later in life, but here is someone who took it on to inspire a nation to make a difference -- and appears to be succeeding. Hats off to Oliver!

Bob Marley: lost life to cancer defended after death

From the beginning, I was a fan of the music of Jamaican singer, guitarist, songwriter and activist Bob Marley. Once while playing a game of Trivial Pursuit with a group of brainiacs -- that I was sure I was going to lose -- I won because of Bob Marley. So, it was a sad day when the news came that Marley, only 36, had died of cancer. In 1977, Marley found a wound on his right toe. He thought it was a sports injury, but it was melanoma under the toe nail. He refused to have his toe amputated because of his Rastafarian beliefs that the body must be whole. In time, the cancer spread to Marley's brain, lungs, liver, and stomach. Marley finally did seek medical help, and went to Munich in order to receive treatment from cancer specialist Josef Issels, but the cancer had already progressed to the terminal stage. Marley lost his life to cancer in May 1981. He died without a will.

Recently, and over twenty years after Marley's death, Marley's bass player Aston Barrett, attempted to sue Island Records and the Marley family for 60 million pounds stating he did not receive royalties and songwriting credits. Last Monday the suit was dismissed. But not before Barrett had a chance to malign the late Marley as nothing more than someone good at playing sports -- not the music that gained him worldwide popularity.

"We always felt this would be the outcome, and it was hard to listen to Aston Barrett reduce his friend Bob to someone who was more interested in playing football than making music," the family said in a statement. Now, Barrett will be liable for court costs and forced to sell two properties in Jamaica as a result of the ruling. Greed will get you, one way or the other. I was happy to hear the ruling went the way it did.

Naked Chef Jamie Oliver recipe for healthy eating

Celebrity Naked Chef Jamie Oliver, on a quest to transform the eating habits of school children, appeared on NBC's Today Show with Katie Couric this morning to share fun healthy recipes and tips on how to encourage children to eat healthy. Oliver suggested involving your children in meal preparation, from planning the menu -- to visiting the fishmonger in selecting fish for dinner -- to preparing the meal. In the spring cooking school episode, Fake out your family with these healthy dishes, showed Oliver preparing Summer Pan-Baked Salmon that children would not turn down. NBC features the salmon recipe, as well as several others, for viewers online.

In addition, Oliver hosts Jamie's School Lunch Project, which airs on The Learning Channel. This television series covers a range of issues, from diet and obesity, behavior, nutritional standards, food education -- to the need for a clear government policy on school meals and children's diets. I cannot imagine a better long-term cancer prevention plan than teaching children how to eat healthy when they are young. Oliver makes it easy and fun. TLC hosts an online feature of Oliver's show, with tips, recipes and advice. To learn more about Oliver's projects, programs and where to find his blog, go here.
