At the age of 93, former President Gerald R. Ford had become our longest living former president. As the nation mourns the passing of former President Ford, who died Tuesday at his home in Rancho Mirage, California, he is being remembered as a great healer of the nation in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. At the time he pardoned former President Nixon, he was questioned and criticized for the wisdom of that action. In retrospect, his decision was credited for helping the nation move forward and heal.

Recovered alcoholic and breast cancer survivor Betty Ford is known for being a healer for the people of this nation in her own right. She willingly battled her most private demons and medical challenges openly, breaking the rules by speaking publicly about struggles society deemed private matters best kept quiet and spoken of only in whispers behind closed doors.

"It's hard for anyone born perhaps after 1980 or even in 1970 to understand that these things were not talked about," said Dr. Patricia Ganz, director of the division of cancer prevention and control research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. "They were very stigmatizing. A woman didn't dare to mention to her friends, employer, extended family, that she had breast cancer."

Betty is credited with the successful launch of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by attending the first luncheon. Nancy G. Brinker, founder of the foundation, has said of Betty Ford, "If she had not come, we would never have been able to launch. I don't think young women today realize the importance of what she did -- she lit the candle in dark rooms all over the world in healthcare and substance abuse and human understanding."

History will record that both former President Gerald R. Ford and former First lady Betty Ford were profound healers, in courage, compassion and wisdom.

Preston Barden, the father of nine and grandfather of eight, told his family he will be back home at Christmas.

On June 20th, Barden began his walking odyssey to break the Guinness World Book Record for the fastest time crossing the US on foot for a round trip total of 5,900 miles. While he is doing this, he is asking for donations to benefit the National Children's Cancer Society -- and he hopes to raise $30 million dollars with his effort.

Barden, who began in New York City, said, "If I do the round trip I will be the first person to do the round trip, and then it will also be America's longest walk-a-thon."

Barden, a welder by trade and a martial arts instructor with four black belts, totes a 55-pound backpack with tokens of inspiration from those who have died of cancer. Our days start early now that Joey is in kindergarten and school begins promptly at 7:45 AM. His daddy gets him out of bed at 6:30 AM so he can have some time to wake to the world before shuffling out the door, and we've happily found that Mister Rogers' Neighborhood comes on at just this time. The same Mister Rogers that first appeared on television in Canada in 1963 and then in the United States in 1967 -- with a gentle man, Mister Rogers himself, spreading his calm but uplifting messages to children and nurturing personalities of kids everywhere.

The last original episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was aired in 2001. And in 2003, Fred McFeeley Rogers died at the age of 74 after a brief bout with stomach cancer. But his legacy lives on as his show -- the longest-running PBS program ever -- still graces the television screen. I remember watching this show with my grandmother when I was a little girl. And now I get to watch it with my little boy -- who can also visit Mister Rogers on the PBS website.

Today, Joey and I started our day with a cheery little song, sung by the man who hated television and joined it only to bring about change -- to use this fabulous instrument to guide children in a positive direction. And here is what he sang this morning -- the song that is still playing in my head as I take on the day ahead of me.

It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
It's such a happy feeling: You're growing inside.
And when you wake up ready to say,
"I think I'll make a snappy new day."
It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling,

On Sunday, breast cancer activists in Cyprus claim they are new Guinness Book of Records record holder for the world's longest chain of bras. In an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer, a local Cyprus breast cancer support group connected 114,000 bras together to form a continuous string of bras. The former record for the world's longest chain of bras belonged to Singapore, when in 2003, a group there strung 79,000 bras together. According to the AP news release, hundreds of people assembled at this seaside city's small harbor early Sunday to help form a colorful chain of bras donated from around the world. It is reported that the crowd cried when activist Louisa van Rooij read a message in support of the cause from a woman dying of breast cancer. She had written the message on two bras linked together -- one belonging to her and the other to her mother -- who had already died from breast cancer.
