Wide World of Sports announcer Bill Flemming dies of cancer

Original ABC Wide World of Sports announcer Bill Flemming, also known for broadcasting college football, golf, and Olympic events, died last Friday of prostate cancer. He was 80.

Before sports fans were watching televised football games all weekend long -- and then watching on-going highlights on ESPN -- they were listening to Fleming's Sunday afternoon run-down of the previous day's games. He offered fans a glimpse into matches from other regions, and he traveled all over these same regions if it meant capturing a story. He announced 11 Olympics and more than 600 Wide World of Sports events. He once shuttled from hurling in Ireland to car racing in Santa Monica, California, to a parachuting contest in Bavaria, all in just one month.

Named Norman Flemming on the day he was born in 1926, this man grew up in the Chicago area, moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan as a high school student, and was a member of Ann Arbor High School's state championship football team in 1943. He was also co-captain of the basketball team. He came by athletics naturally. Speech, his eventual college major, was another love. In 1949, he won a campus-wide speech contest and landed the grand prize: a summer job at WUOM, the campus radio station. He worked his way up to sports director. And then his career took off.

NC State basketball coach Kay Yow back in the game

Kay Yow, head coach of the North Carolina State women's basketball team, returns to her job today following a two-month leave she took to fight cancer for a third time. Yow's first game back will be on Thursday against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rival Virginia.

Yow, 64, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. Two years ago the disease returned and was treated. And in November, Yow left her team after doctors determined her cancer had returned once again.

For the past two months, Yow has been receiving chemotherapy along with other new therapies. And while Yow's disease is not gone and her life-extending treatment will continue throughout the season, doctors say her health has improved. And she says she's ready to get back in the game.

Yow, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and coached the U.S. women's team to a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, has been a head coach for 32 seasons. Her assistant Stephanie Glance led the Wolfpack team (13-7, 2-3 ACC) in Yow's absence.

Billy Bush celebrity reporter blogs children with cancer

Billy Bush, co-anchor of Access Hollywood, the daily entertainment newsmagazine that provides coverage of entertainment personalities on television, also keeps a blog. Yesterday, he blogged his recent visit to Padres Contra de Cancer, a children's hospital in Los Angeles. Eva Longoria had invited him to come with her as she is a long-time supporter and visits quite often.

Bush blogs, "I arrived early to walk through the hospital floor, meet the organizers and get acquainted with some of the families whose children were in the fight of their lives. I was a bit nervous and anxious, because above all else, I will never understand why some children have this disease.  It hurts to the core just trying to fathom this injustice."

During his visit, Bush met a little boy named Kevin, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatments and who has decided to set up a lemonade stand to raise money for video games he wants. Bush asked Kevin how much he was charging for a glass of lemonade and he said he was charging $100 dollars a glass. The next day, Bush received an email from Kevin's mother saying that Kevin had decided to slash the price of his lemonade by 90 percent to the incredible sale price of ten dollars a glass. So, if you are looking for a really good deal on a glass of lemonade, contact Padres Contra de Cancer -- they can hook you up.
