Virtual colonoscopy: 3-D non-invasive screening
Virtual colonoscopies, using a three-dimensional computed tomography colonography, is a non-invasive procedure for colorectal cancer screening and as accurate as the traditional very invasive procedure, according to the conclusion of a study conducted by University of Wisconsin researchers. "Virtual colonoscopy produces precise and detailed 3-D fly-through images of the entire colon's interior without having to insert a scope -- there is essentially no risk of bleeding or of perforating the colon," stated Dr. Perry J. Pickhardt.
Virtual colonoscopies take an estimated ten minutes to perform, as the patient passes through a scanning machine. The researchers suggest that this new way of testing might bring more reluctant patients -- who avoid the invasive and uncomfortable colonoscopies available now -- in to be screened. Oh, ya think? Virtual colonoscopy is the screening test I would choose. Who wouldn't? Of course, if polyps or cancers are found, they must be removed by optical colonoscopy.
I cannot imagine anyone who would forego a colonoscopy if they can be offered the virtual colonoscopy screening. I certainly hope this becomes a standard in every part of the country.

CarePages: caregivers connect and share in online community
Eric and Sharon Langshur launched CarePages after their newborn son, Matthew, was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. As a way to keep friends and family informed, they created a website that included updates, a message board and a photo gallery. The webpage worked so well for them that they started a business offering free webpages to caregivers to help them provide information to family and friends -- and to nurture an online community for caregivers. According to the Langshur couple, CarePages is touching the lives of more than one million families across the globe.Getting started is easy. Sign up for your free webpage and in minutes you are ready to share information and become part of the CarePages community. Your webpage is as private or as public as you choose. As a CarePages member, you can create a virtual meeting place on the web, share news and photos, thoughts and feelings, and receive emotional support.
These days, there is no need to be alone as you and your loved one face the challenges and struggles of a cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment.
WOMAN: virtual race for women
Women and girls On the Move Across the Nation is a virtual race where women participate by following routes across the country without leaving their hometowns. The WOMAN Challenge event, which begins May 14 and ends July 8, is sponsored by the Office on Women's Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of National Women's Health Week challenging women and girls to become more physically active. You register online here, choose a route, wear a pedometer, submit your pedometer reading at the end of each day at the WOMAN Challenge website and see the progress you are making in completing the route. You will receive updates on your progress weekly, as well as motivational emails and valuable health information. They even provide a conversion chart for some activities that are difficult to measure using a pedometer such as riding a bike, gardening or water activities. Did you know that each minute of bike riding is equal to 148 steps -- or -- that each minute of gardening is equal to 73 steps?
All women and girls are welcome to participate, including wheelchair bound women. They have armband pedometers -- so, no excuses. Not sure how to increase the amount of steps you take each day? They offer some suggestions to increase your daily physical activity. Here are a few ideas:
- Park your car in a parking space farther from your destination than you normally would.
- Take your children, dogs, etc. outdoors to play or for a long walk.
- Do some yard work or housecleaning.
- Bike, walk, or wheel to work, to run errands, or to visit friends.
- Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator.

Join the Young Survival Coalition and Stand Up For Survival! as we take a virtual walk to raise money for programs and services dedicated to young women affected by breast cancer.
